AUSLAN - LOTE

At Little Grove Primary School Auslan is taught as the Language other than English (LOTE) to students in Pre-Primary to Year 6. The school began it’s Auslan journey in 2024. Now, each week students attend a one-hour LOTE class run by a specialist teacher. Lessons are dynamic and engaging, with the integration of music, dance, art and drama.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the recognized visual language of the Australian Deaf community. It is a distinct language with its own grammar, syntax, and structure. Auslan uses a combination of hand shapes, facial expressions, body movements, and spatial concepts to convey meaning. Learning Auslan not only allows students to communicate with the Deaf and hard of hearing community, it also promotes inclusivity, cultural awareness, and appreciation for diversity.
