The children began by learning and practicing the signs for Hello and Goodbye. Ask your children to show you the signs at home. Parents are able to see what sign will be taught each week on the new "Wild about Auslan" noticeboard at the entry to the Early Childhood Centre - have a look next time you are in the school.
Sign language was introduced to Australia by British and Irish immigrants in the 1800s. Since that time, Auslan has evolved into the modern language used today.
It is important to note that although there are similarities to other sign languages, Auslan is unique to Australia. In fact, within Australia there are two dialects: Northern and Southern. Here in WA, the Deaf community most often use the Southern Dialect. Most of the Auslan students will be learning at Little Grove will be from the Southern dialect.
